Program ( 1 Days )

After meeting your guide at the Port of Izmir, we will embark on a scenic drive to Pergamum. Bergama is home to two of Turkey’s most significant archaeological treasures: the Acropolis and the Asclepion of ancient Pergamum, both recognized as among the top historical sites in the Mediterranean.

Perched atop a conical hill that rises 1,000 feet above the lush valley, Pergamum (or Pergamon) served as an influential capital city in antiquity. The name "Pergamum" translates to “citadel” in Greek. The contemporary city of Bergama, located 70 miles north of Izmir, stands as the modern successor to the ancient site.

Many of the remarkable structures in Bergama date back to the reign of Eumenes II (197-159 BC), including the illustrious library, the impressive hillside theater, the main palace, the Altar of Zeus, and the propylaeum of the Temple of Athena. In the early Christian period, the church of Pergamum emerged as a significant center for Christianity and is recognized as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Revelation 2:12-17).

The ancient city is organized into three primary sections: the Acropolis, which served both social and cultural purposes; the Lower City, representing the area for the lower classes; and the Asclepion, one of the earliest medical centers known in history.

Important Note: Please wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing, and consider bringing a hat and sunscreen for protection against the sun.
